Referral Process

Note that secure messaging is our preferred method of receiving referrals.

When clients visit their GP for a Mental Health Care Plan, we advise them to inform the receptionist at the medical centre beforehand to ensure the appropriate appointment length can be scheduled.

Referral validity

In consultation with Medicare and the APS, Wise Psychology has identified that a valid referral letter under Medicare’s Better Access programme must contain all of the following components:

Date
Patient’s name
Patient’s date of birth
Patient’s address
Diagnosis
A request for services
The referring practitioner’s Medicare number
The referring practitioner’s signature

This information is preferred in the format of a referral letter, and a copy of the Mental Health Treatment Plan is not necessary. However, a Mental Health Treatment Plan copy that includes the above information can be considered a valid referral for delivery of services under Better Access funding.
